The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is a subspecies of the Asian elephant that lives on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. They belong to the Elephantidae family and are one of the protected animals because of their endangered status. Here is some information about the Sumatran elephant:

Physical characteristics

The Sumatran elephant is the smallest of the three other Asian elephant subspecies. They weigh between 2 and 4 tonnes and are about 2 to 3 meters at the shoulder. This elephant has relatively smaller ears compared to the Indian elephant, and the back tends to curve.

Sumatran elephant tusks tend to be smaller and sometimes not fully developed, and this is one characteristic that sets them apart from other Asian elephant subspecies.

Habitat and Distribution

The Sumatran elephant was once widespread in the lowland and mountainous forests of the island of Sumatra. However, due to forest encroachment and human activities that destroy their habitat, the Sumatran elephant population has decreased drastically.

Currently, Sumatran elephants can only be found in several protected areas in Sumatra, such as Gunung Leuser National Park, Way Kambas National Park, and several other areas that still have their natural habitat.

Behavior and Food

Sumatran elephants are herbivores, meaning their main diet consists of plants and leaves. They can spend most of their daily time looking for food. This elephant has a complex social system and lives in groups of several individuals, with an older female as the leader of the group.

The Sumatran elephants are also very familiar with verbal and non-verbal communication, including using sounds, body movements and facial expressions to communicate with each other.

Why elephants become commercial animals

Many question about, why elephants are sold to visitors to be ridden, it might be a pity to see them because they have to ride 2 to 3 people. However, these elephants require very high costs for food, so 75% of the cost for elephant riding at Bali zoo is used for their needs.

Besides that, Bali Zoo is not a wilderness where all animals can move according to their natural habitat. So with this elephant riding activity at Bali Zoo, they can walk for 20 minutes to 4 hours every day depending on participants who are interested in riding elephants.
